A blow to Democrats: Michigan’s Jewish Attorney General, Dana Nessel, boycotted her party’s endorsement convention last Saturday: “I was Jewish before I was a member of the Democratic Party. I don’t feel safe coming. I feel like my presence will not be welcomed. I don’t want to be chased, I don’t want to be harassed, I don’t want to be shouted and screamed at. I believe that if I attend, that’s what will happen—because it’s already happening to me.”
The absence of Nessel, who has served since 2019, has become a symbol of the deep rift between the Jewish and pro-Israel community and the progressive wing of the local party branch. Nessel accused party leadership of “definitely not” doing enough to address antisemitism, particularly after activists accused of antisemitic vandalism and threats were allowed to attend party events.
